Back in November last year I mentioned sorting out a hosting company. Well that's now coming to fruition and very soon I will be offering hosting.

Basically I have a server which I have full control and root access on so I'll be sorting that out for virtual hosting. A few details about the server which no doubt people will want to know about... As of last night it now runs Debian 3.1 (fully patched as of last night) which is my favoured Linux distro for both the desktop and web servers (plug plug). Running Bind9 for DNS and that will take a few days to set up so you can point domains at it so I'l be doing that over the weekend. I'll be running vsftpd on the box which means no annon logins, you'll be jailed in to your own folder and what not, standard stuff really. PHP5 will be on the box and MySql as well. Perl 5 is installed but you'll only get a cgi-bin on request and only if you have a good reason. I love Perl but I'd prefer that people use PHP. I'm thinking about RoR (Ruby on Rails) but I'm not sure yet and by default you'll also get Python. I'm considering PhpMyAdmin - we'll see.

As for actual hosting packages I'm unsure yet. I think if you want a basic blog we can come to some arrangement where you get a default install of WP for free (ie no admin charge for me to set it up) with the details to login to the install as admin, after that you're on your own (changing your pass and what not). Disk Space is something I'm yet to consider, but I think that about 100meg, for now, is reasonable with a view to making that larger as time and resources get better (or if you require something custom). Bandwidth will be limited to a month by month basis - there is no such thing as free... If you use more than your quota then you'll be charged appropriately, if you request more then you'll get it for less and it will up your monthly bill.

Monthly Charges

I've decided to go monthly with payments that way if you feel you no longer want to the hosting:

1. I don't have to refund anything.
2. You can easily just give me short notice.

Now comes the cash bit...

I've no idea how much anyone else currently pays for there shared hosting right now - frankly I don't care. If you already have you own domain and just want a blog then it'll be a tenner a month; wanting something more or custom and we'll have to talk about it. I think a tenner is reasonable for what you'll be getting, because you'll be getting quality, security and the personal touch from me.

Data Centre

Redbus, need I say anymore?

So if you're interested in talking about something, finding out more or getting hosting like ASAP then fly me an email, comment here or whatever.

I've never really worked out what's better between Pearl, Ruby and PHP. Technology is moving so quick!

I mean, I thought AJAX was pretty new, but apprently it's been round the block a lot longer than some lass from round my way.

Your pricing is well placed fella, certainly a bargin given the support (technology) that your dishing out.

So many WPMU hosts don't have the box to back up the plugins and add-ons.

Question - There's a Wordpress database back-up script that exists. I assume every use who has WP would have a seperate databaes? Else I'm thinking this could be an issue (Dump the whole database info).

PS - IE5 Mac ?!?! Another browser to check layouts on !?!?

PPS - Also be interested in your CAPTCHA function, and how it works. Totally randon or session based? Just had the same text in less than 15 seconds. Session based??

Yes everyone will have there own databases and although I will back up the box regularly it will be down to users to back up stuff as well. I won't be held responsible for that, only the box itself.

Aye, I used "AJAX" a long time ago on a companies intranet; it's nothing new it's just now that Mozilla supports it, it suddenly because more useful.

Not just IE5, currently there are about 11 browsers (various versions) that potentially could come to your site; you can never please them all so monitoring your traffic to see which ones are the majority of your traffic and pleasing those is paramount.

Yep the captcha is based on a session so you could be here for the length of the session and still have the same thing to type in!
